WWE Smackdown May 9th, 2025: Matches, Predictions & More

Tonight is the last episode of WWE Smackdown before Backlash which is taking place this Saturday. The card is coming in with a bit of a muted reaction from fans, but the anticipated main event should get one final jolt of energy from its performers tonight. Let's dive into the preview.

John Cena Will Appear On The Show

Last time John Cena and Randy Orton shared a ring on WWE Smackdown, Cena tried to land a cheap shot on Orton after threatening to erase his family's legacy from WWE. He closed the segment however with his back on the mat after receiving an RKO.

Orton promised the next week to punt Cena's head at Backlash, but if Cena's character is anything to go by he will likely cut a very bitter promo tonight where he tries to discredit the threat of The Viper at Backlash. Cena actually does have a positive win-loss record of 13-7-1 against Orton, so he may lean into that for his promo as well.

Jade Cargill Vs. Nia Jax: Number One Contender's Match For WWE Women's Championship

Prediction: Nia Jax Will Face Tiffany Stratton Next

In recent weeks, Nia Jax and Jade Cargill have both been laying claims that they should be the next contender for Tiffany Stratton's WWE Women's Championship. Cargill and Stratton were actually victorious against Jax and Naomi last week, but Cargill and Stratton had a tense staredown after Cargill picked up the championship.

But despite the tease, Cargill winning tonight just doesn't seem to be in the cards. Naomi and Cargill have unfinished business, so it seems that Naomi will interfere in tonight's match to ensure that Jax picks up the win.

LA Knight & Damian Priest Vs. Jacob Fatu & Solo Sikoa

Prediction: Knight & Priest Will Work Better Together Than Fatu & Sikoa

Since winning the United States Championship at WrestleMania 41, Jacob Fatu has had to fend off challenges from multiple wrestlers. Namely, Damian Priest, Drew McIntyre and former champion LA Knight all feel they have a claim to the US Title.

Solo Sikoa since losing the Ula Fala to Roman Reigns back in January seems to have settled into a support role for his cousin Jacob Fatu. A lot of time though, it seems that Sikoa's "help" ends up blowing up in his face. It should be no different tonight as I expect Knight and Priest to put their differences aside long enough to get a pin over Sikoa and Fatu.
