After spending more than a year on the shelf, former NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov returned to WWE action and picked up gold in a major win.
Dragunov defeated former champion Sami Zayn, whose weekly open challenge was initially accepted by The Miz. Miz, however, was interrupted by Carmelo Hayes, who said "not today" and returned the favor to the "A-List" superstar.
Zayn and Dragunov competed in an athletic back-and-forth contest that has become the standard for these U.S. Championship Open Challenges. Surprisingly, Dragunov dethroned Zayn as United States Champion after a distraction from Solo Sikoa. This marks Ilja's first championship win on the main roster.
His celebration was short-lived as the MFTs were quick to attack after the match.
