It’s been well-known for over a year that John Cena will not compete in a WWE ring ever again after 2025. Still, given that wrestlers never truly stay retired, fans and media outlets have been speculating that the former 17-time WWE Champion will eventually return for at least one more match, specifically for one against The Rock at WrestleMania 42.

On Thursday, an article posted to WWE’s official website addressed the speculation that Cena will eventually return for one more match against “The Final Boss,” as author Mark Kaboly suggested a shocking “what if” scenario that might take place after Cena’s final, which will be against Gunther on Saturday night.

“But… what it this wasn’t, in fact, Cena’s last match,” said WWE.com’s Mark Kaboly. “All this press he’s been doing, hammering home that this is it for him, it’s just a ploy to make the reveal as shocking as his turn to the dark side 10 months ago. What if it comes full circle from WWE Elimination Chamber? The Rock returns and informs Cena that he wants his soul now, and as his Final Boss, this will be settled at WrestleMania 42 – a rubber match at WrestleMania that is 13 years in the making. Could you imagine?”

Of course, it should be noted that it’s unlikely that WWE.com’s writers are clued in on the company’s creative vision. Still, it would be a somewhat shocking scenario, especially given that Cena keeps promising that he will not continue past Saturday Night’s Main Event, citing that the in-ring product has “passed him by,” as he doesn’t feel physically capable or comfortable with performing in the ring anymore with his age and physical limitations.

However, The Rock and John Cena still have unfinished business, especially given that “The Great One” was a key factor in Cena’s heel turn back at Elimination Chamber. Since then, the former Attitude Era megastar hasn’t been seen on WWE television.

Wrestling retirements never last forever, and even though Cena has promised that Saturday night will be the final time competes in a WWE ring, a possible confrontation with The Rock shouldn’t be ruled out either, mainly because one more match against his most famous rival on the company’s grandest stage would be a far more fitting sendoff than a match against Gunther, who he has no history with.
