John Cena has faced nearly every major star of the past generation, from The Rock to Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton and current WWE CEO Triple H, which should make picking a single rival as his "biggest" one a tough ask.
That's seemingly not the case, as the 17-time world champion prepares to step away from the ring at the end of this year.
Cena revealed that none of the aforementioned wrestlers, nor anyone else in particular, were his biggest rival throughout his WWE career.
During a WIRED session in which he had to answer a few of his most-searched questions on Google, Cena was asked to name the opponent who defined his career, and the legendary wrestler didn’t hesitate.

"Who is John Cena’s biggest rival? That one’s simple," Cena said. "The audience."
Cena explained the unique crowd dynamics that became part of his legacy and defined his career, labeling WWE fans cheering for and booing him as "tireless" and "tough."
For years, Cena was both loved and hated, enduring chants ranging from “Let’s Go Cena” to “Cena Sucks” echoing across arenas in the U.S. and worldwide.
“My goodness, we’ve been going back and forth for almost 25 years now. You’re tireless. You have the energy of an everlasting battery," Cena said. "I’ve tried to break you. I can’t. You got me on the ropes. This is my last nerve. I’ve said I’m gonna retire, and I will go down swinging, trying to crack your resolve, but damn it, you guys are tough. You are my biggest rival."
Cena’s career has spanned nearly 25 years, beginning with his 2002 debut against Kurt Angle.
His list of accomplishments includes 17 world titles, surpassing Ric Flair’s total, five United States Championships, four tag team titles, two Royal Rumble victories, and headlining WrestleMania five times.
Cena's farewell tour has already included major appearances worldwide, with matches still scheduled at Clash in Paris on Aug. 31, WrestlePalooza in Indianapolis on Sept. 20, and Crown Jewel in Perth on Oct. 11 before his career ends in December.
Cena’s retirement match is officially set for Dec. 13 during Saturday Night’s Main Event, streaming on Peacock. WWE has not announced an opponent, but the bout is expected to take place at TD Garden in Boston, close to Cena’s hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts.
