Mariah May signed with WWE last week, appearing on NXT TV for the first time. This week, the former AEW Women's Champion returned, and her name has been revealed - Blake Monroe. The quite sweet origins of that name have already been explained. However, it seems that for the second time, WWE hasn't done enough research before landing on a name for a new act and has accidentally named May after an adult film star.
Shortly after confirmation that May will go by Blake Monroe in WWE, BodySlam.net revealed that the Blake part is inspired by May's niece, and the Monroe surname is an homage to Marilyn Monroe. All very sweet and straightforward. However, a slightly deeper dive into the name, clearly deeper than WWE cared to dive, revealed May shares her new name with an adult film star.
Cultaholic made the observation in a follow-up article, and naturally, there's quite a lot of chatter about it among fans, most of whom weren't fans of the new Blake Monroe name to begin with. Comments about the name are effectively a 50/50 split between people saying the name is something you'd expect to see in the adult film industry, and fans in the know replying something along the lines of "Well, it's funny you should say that."
While I won't go through the non-wrestling Blake Monroe's filmography here, the bright side for WWE is that she appears to have been out of the adult film game for a while. She has already been tagged by wrestling fans on Twitter, though, and while her profile makes it clear that she's retired, I'm guessing she's about to get a lot of unexpected attention. Although she hasn't tweeted since 2021, so maybe she won't see it.
This isn't the first time WWE hasn't done its due diligence and accidentally overlapped with the adult movie industry when naming a new act. When Paige formed a faction with Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch, the group dubbed themselves the Submission Sorority. Turns out that name has strong connotations with the adult film industry, and the group's name was quickly changed to the much simpler, and far less problematic, PCB.
That instance had far more relevant and instantaneous problems for WWE and was likely a code red situation. Whether Blake Monroe will register on its radar quite as prominently remains to be seen. Since the star with which the newly-named May shares her name has long since retired and isn't well known, WWE might ride out the storm and stick with the Blake Monroe name.
