Cody Rhodes is in his fourth month as a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion and he looks set to close out the year against one of his fiercest rivals. The American Nightmare's second reign with the world title has been under scrutiny as of late and it seems WWE are intent on trying to get the best out of one of his most lengthy programs.
Rhodes is embroiled in a feud with Drew McIntyre and that is set to continue ahead of the Road to WrestleMania 42. The pair have already faced one another twice for the title, with Rhodes coming out on top at Wrestlepalooza and Saturday Night's Main Event.
According to Bodyslam.net, Rhodes and McIntyre's feud will continue, and another match between the duo will take place soon. It's claimed that "the next confrontation will have significant storyline implications for both men."
Their issues continued this past Friday on SmackDown when Rhodes attacked McIntyre in his car after general manager Nick Aldis informed him that he was still suspended. But the champion called on Aldis to reinstate the Scottish Warrior so that he could once again get his hands on him.
Rhodes and McIntyre's feud has left much to admire, as the challenger has fallen short each time they collide. There were reports back in September that they had pitched the Scot becoming champion via interference from Randy Orton, but such an idea wasn't taken up.
It seems highly likely that Rhodes will be heading to WrestleMania 42 as champion next April, and as such, you wouldn't expect him to be dropping the title beforehand. The time to throw a spanner in the works was at Wrestlepalooza, giving McIntyre enough time with the belt before the American Nightmare gets his big win back before the Show of Shows.
This rivalry has done more harm than good to McIntyre, who looks weak after failing to dethrone Rhodes on several occasions. Nobody believes he can beat the American Nightmare, and that lack of believability has made SmackDown's world title picture less appealing.
Rhodes has plenty of other challengers that could make for interesting feuds ahead of the Royal Rumble. A returning Jacob Fatu is an option while someone like Sami Zayn stepping up in a big babyface matchup is a unique direction.
