Zilla Fatu made his long-awaited WWE debut on NXT last week, interfering in a number-one contender matchup for the NXT Championship between Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller. This week, the man known as The Main One signed his contract during the last segment of NXT, making him an official member of the roster. Fatu went around high-fiving fans during his entrance, but he paused for a moment after reaching the announce desk.

At the desk sat someone pivotal in this long journey to the WWE, the Hall of Famer, Booker T. After staring at each other for a moment, while Booker T repeated the phrase “that’s right,” the two embraced, and Fatu gave Booker T two pats on the side. That was a genuine moment, as Booker T was the one who started Zilla Fatu on his professional wrestling journey and may have helped save his life in the process.

Six Years Away

At age 15, Fatu was sentenced to six years in a Texas state prison after being charged with aggravated robbery. It felt inevitable, given that he fell in with the wrong crowd after his father, Eddie Fatu, better known as Umaga, passed away. There was another father figure of sorts in Shelton Benjamin (a former WWE star), but given his schedule, he could only do so much. Zilla Fatu and his family struggled to pick up the pieces after Umaga’s death and were forced to move into a less favorable living situation. That led to Fatu hanging with the wrong crowd, skipping school, and ultimately, prison.

It took a while, but he finally got back on the right path. During an interview with Chris Van Vliet last year, Fatu said that his fourth year in prison was when he began making the necessary changes.

I just got tired of the results I was getting. I was tired of what was happening to me. I was tired of the environment I was in. There was so much stuff I seen in there that I don’t want to see again.

From there, Fatu started hanging around the “right OG’s” who wanted to help others change their lives around. Fatu also began attending counseling and therapy and reading while incarcerated. After his release in 2022, Fatu was determined to never return to that environment.

Booker T’s Reality Of Wrestling

It took a while, but Fatu eventually found his path to stardom. After not doing much during the ten months following his release, Fatu woke up one day and told himself he was going to do this (wrestling). Fatu then told his mother, and once she realized he was serious, the two conversed for hours about beginning the journey. Once Fatu put the rest of his legal issues behind him (finishing parole classes), he called the five-time World Heavyweight Champion, Booker T.

The two talked for nearly six hours, and afterwards Booker T let Zilla Fatu know about the love he had for his late father and family. From there, Booker T told his fellow Houston resident to come to the Reality of Wrestling facility, and he would be “taken care of.” Fatu was thrown right into the fire, going through three months of grueling training, which made him question whether wrestling was actually for him. After completing the training, Fatu spoke about how much respect he gained for the business, as he thought it would be easy because of his lineage.

Pressure can either burst pipes or make diamonds, and the latter looks to be the case for Zilla Fatu. After making waves on the independent circuit for three years, The Main One has arrived in WWE.

Thrown Right Back Into The Fire On NXT

When he interfered in that match between Montana and Waller, Fatu made it clear that he was coming after Tony D’Angelo and the NXT Championship. The Main One will be granted that opportunity on Sunday, August 30th, at NXT Heatwave in Fatu’s home state of Texas.

It did not take long for Zilla Fatu to make enemies in NXT. Not only did he interfere in the match between Montana and Waller, but now he stands in their way of capturing the gold. WWE clearly has big plans for this member of the Samoan dynasty, as Fatu could become the face of NXT after his first match.

End Of My Zilla Fatu WWE Rant

Overall, the reception for this member of the famous Anoa’i family has been positive, but as with most WWE superstars, there are a few who are not on board. Some of the comments on social media from fans included: “Another Samoan?” “He’s doing the same moves!” and sarcastically saying, “Samoan Wrestling Entertainment.” While the impact of Samoan wrestlers in WWE is tremendous, there are not nearly as many on the roster as it sometimes feels.

WWE has nearly 200 superstars, and only nine of them are Samoan. That includes Bronson Reed, who has not been on television since January, and PJ Vasa, who is currently on the Evolve roster (respectfully). Many believe that the MFTs, Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga, are included, but as their names imply, they are Tongan, not Samoan.

Regarding doing the same moves, at the end of the day, Samoans will perform the Samoan Drop. It is a signature move of the culture. This family tree is not the only one that recycles moves, as we see Dominic Mysterio hit his father’s 619 and Nattie execute her uncle’s Sharpshooter. The recycling of moves also extends outside of family members. Over the years, we have seen Pedigrees from Seth Rollins, Stunners from Kevin Owens, and Montez Ford perform the Rock Bottom. Samoans are not the only wrestlers who do this.

The Main One has put in the work and overcome numerous obstacles to reach this point. While I understand some of the claims of nepotism, since his first match will be for the NXT Championship, it does not make him unworthy of being the champion. Zilla Fatu is called The Main One for a reason, and as time goes on, I am confident that he will show us why.
