The Kansas City Chiefs started their 2025 season 0-2 with losses to the Chargers and the Eagles. After that 0-2 start paired with the Chargers not only beating them but starting the year at 2-0 and then 3-0, people really started to buy in that narrative in the AFC West had shifted. And hey, to those people's credit, it still might.
If the Chiefs beat the Jaguars on Monday night, three teams will be 3-2 in the AFC West, including K.C. The Chargers, however, fumbled a huge opportunity to stay in the clear lead of their first division title since 2009 when they were still in San Diego but have lost back-to-back games. They're now 3-2 and while they do hold tiebreakers over the Chiefs and Broncos (who are also 3-2), that won't do them much good if they can't get back into win column.
Not only did the Chargers lose in blowout fashion to the Commanders (and did so after leading 10-0 going into the second quarter) but they might have lost their talented rookie running back Omarion Hampton to an injury. Talk about salt in the wound for the Bolts.
This is not the same AFC West that Chiefs fans were used to watching their team beat up on in the early stages of the Patrick Mahomes era. The Broncos look to be a threat in the division and the Chargers looked to be one too, especially after knocking off Kansas City in the first week of the season.
That being said, there's a reason we don't crown teams Super Bowl champions after three weeks of play (well, Chiefs fans don't anyway) and the Chargers have been a prime example of that. They've lost both of their starting tackles to injury, lost Najee Harris to injury, and now might also be without Hampton for some time. That's a brutal blow for a Bolts team that loves to run the ball and bleed the clock.
Chiefs fans shouldn't be laughing at the Chargers for their injury problems because that's not cool. It is, however, okay to laugh at them losing to a Giants team led by a rookie quarterback making his NFL debut last week and to laugh at them blowing a 10-0 lead to the Commanders this past week. The Chargers went from 3-0 and looking unstoppable to now finding themselves tied at the top of the division with the Broncos and potentially the Chiefs after Monday night.
Chiefs fans are enjoying the collapse by the Chargers but know there's a lot of football left to be played. Eyes on the prize, as they say.
