New year, same old Las Vegas Raiders.
Despite some big offseason moves, including hiring Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly and trading for Geno Smith, the Raiders are sitting at 1-4 after five weeks, tied for the second-worst record in the league.
Smith has been a turnover machine (nine interceptions), and the Raiders rank 30th in points per game (16.6). However, as bad as the quarterback has been, Coach Carroll doesn't think he's the problem.
If anything, he doesn't seem to be too satisfied with Chip Kelly's play-calling, and he wants to see more from the running game.
“We have to run the football better, more,” Carroll said, per Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. “The running game has looked well in order right now, we need to get more of them. That’s part of it. That’s just mixing football. That’s how you do it. We don’t ever want to rely on the quarterback has to do the whole show, sitting in the shotgun, throw the football. Never coach that way. So we have to mix our stuff so we can use our play action game.”
Carroll also went out of his way to defend Smith's erratic play and decision-making, stating that it was up to the play-caller to put him in a position to succeed:
"We’ve got to make sure that we’re calling all the best stuff in the situations," Carroll added. "He’s not calling the plays. We’ve got to call them and we’ve got to make sure and get him in the right spots and give him the best chance to stay out of harm’s way."
Kelly's track record has been a mixed bag, but he seems to have the pieces to do much better than this. As for Smith, his coach is right, but he also needs to take better care of the football.
