According to former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will encounter their greatest hurdle in the form of readiness for the matches ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Pathan emphasised the importance of regular game time to keep both players in shape as they prepare for what could be their last major international tournament. Both players have retired from the Test and T20I formats.

The conversation about the future started on October 4 when the BCCI revealed the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Rohit and Kohli returned to the team for the first time since the team’s Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, while Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, succeeding Sharma. In his recent YouTube video, Irfan Pathan spoke about the importance of match practice for the two senior players.

“Rohit has put in a lot of effort on his fitness, and he’s focused on that. However, there’s a difference between regular fitness and game-time fitness. If you’re not playing cricket regularly, you need to ensure you get some game time. They should consider playing domestic cricket,” Pathan said.

Irfan Pathan mentioned that while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have vast experience, their lack of regular match play creates gaps in their preparation. He highlighted that consistent game time is crucial for maintaining fitness and sharpness ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

“They are experienced players and know what’s required. However, with no involvement in T20Is, there will be significant gaps. To stay fit, they need regular game time. Only then will their goal of playing in the 2027 World Cup become a reality,” Pathan added.
