Canelo Alvarez looks to defend not only his undisputed Super Middleweight championship against Terence Crawford, but also his spot as an all-time great in the 168 lb weight class.
Sandwiched between the Middleweight and Heavyweight divisions, the Super Middleweight weight class is not one of the glamor divisions.
However, it has contained some of the greatest fighters of all time, including the current champion Canelo Alvarez, who is preparing to defend his belt against Terence Crawford.
We’ve ranked the five greatest Super Middleweights to ever compete in the boxing ring, starting with a former champion who sold out Wembley Stadium.
Did you know Carl Froch knocked out George Groves in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium? Just ask him, he’ll tell you!
“The Cobra” made history in that all-British fight, cementing himself as one of the best Super Middleweights in history, although his career up until that point was already great.
5 years ago today, history was made. I can now happily say that I’m on good terms with my old foe George Groves. Do what you can to reconcile with an old friend or family member, it feels great!

He won the WBC, IBF, and WBA Super Middleweight belts, losing only to Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler to achieve a 33-2 record in the ring.
Froch retired as champion after his Wembley Stadium clash with Groves, ending his career on top of the Super Middleweight division as one of its most impressive warriors.
Since moving up to Super Middleweight in 2019, Canelo Alvarez has dominated the 168 lb division in a way that nobody has in years.
The hard-hitting Mexican made history when he knocked out Caleb Plant to become the undisputed champion, a feat nobody had ever done in the four-belt era of boxing.
Canelo has remained undefeated at Super Middleweight, winning all ten of his fights with some impressive performances against all of the top names in the division, like Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady Golovkin.
A win over another modern great in Crawford would further cement Canelo as an all-time great in the division and one of the top fighters in modern history.
Roy Jones Jr could be on the top five list for numerous weight divisions, having impressed and won world titles in four weight classes, all the way up to Heavyweight.
However, one of those was at 168 lbs, where Jones Jr impressed against James Toney in 1995, in a bout that pit two undefeated legends against one another in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Jones Jr was a dominant champion, defending the title five times against the likes of Eric Lucas and Tony Thornton, going undefeated at Super Middleweight his entire career.
He eventually moved up the divisions to eventually become the Heavyweight champion, but his work in the lower weight classes helped cement his legacy as one of the greatest of all time.
The Super Middleweight division was Andre Ward’s to control in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
The American fighter went 32-0 in his career, using his incredible discipline and exquisite technical skills to ascend to the top of the division and stay there with some dominant performances.
Ward was an intelligent fighter who wasn’t known for his explosive knockouts and was valued more for his control of a fight, dictating the pace and finding ways to neutralize his opponent’s greatest strengths, turning them into weaknesses.
Ward never lost his titles, moving up to Light Heavyweight to win gold at 175 lbs and vacating his Super Middleweight belts before retiring undefeated.
Nobody in Super Middleweight history has dominated the way Joe Calzaghe did in his boxing career.
The Welshman had a perfect record, ending his career with 46 fights, winning them all and forging a legacy that is comparable to all of the all-time greats of the sport.
His reign as Super Middleweight champion began with a win over Chris Eubank in 1997 and lasted for another 11 years, as Calzaghe defended it until his final fight in 2008.
This more-than-a-decade-long reign saw him defeat legends like Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins, managing to adapt his game over the years as his body wore down from a lifetime of fighting.
The “Pride of Wales” may have never had the success in America as many of the top fighters did, but there is no doubting that, with his record, he is the greatest Super Middleweight fighter in boxing history.
