Eduardo Núñez (28-1, 27 KOs) will soon put his IBF super featherweight world title at stake against Christopher Diaz (30-5, 19 KOs).
Their bout headlines a BXSTRS card – done in association with Matchroom Boxing – at the Centro de Usos Múltiples in Los Mochis, México. Fight fans around the world can catch the action live on DAZN. Núñez won his world title in May this year against Masanori Rikiishi. This will be his first time putting it at stake.
Ahead of this September 6 world title contest, Big Fight Weekend previews the fight and what both men will be bringing to the ring.
Núñez made his professional boxing debut in 2015. He suffered his first loss via unanimous decision against Hiram Gallardo after winning 10 fights in a row by stoppage. Following that, he won 17 fights in a row by stoppage to secure a world title shot against Rikiishi. Núñez would go on to win the vacant IBF title via unanimous decision. It would be his first time going the distance in a bout he won.
Núñez has spent nearly the entirety of his professional career fighting in México. However, his last two bouts saw him face opponents in the United States and Japan. The clash against Diaz marks his return to fighting in México. Núñez’s last bout in the country was in October 2023.
Diaz entered the professional ranks in 2013. Boxing fans may recall his multiple appearances on ESPN under the Top Rank banner. When he was 23-0, he first challenged for the WBO super featherweight world title in 2018 against Masayuki Ito, losing a unanimous decision. Diaz then went down to featherweight and won his first fight after making the move. After losing to Shakur Stevenson, he eventually worked his way towards a shot at the WBO world title against Emanuel Navarrete, losing via technical knockout.
Since that loss, Diaz is 4-2 in fights. His last defeat was in December last year against Henry Lebron. Following that, he picked up a win in April this year before getting this opportunity to challenge Núñez for the IBF 130-lb title. This will be Diaz’s third shot at a world title.
Eduardo Núñez is the younger of the two and in better form. With all due respect to Diaz, he just has not done enough of late to warrant another world title shot. Despite that, Núñez vs. Diaz is going ahead (unless something wild happens that causes the main event to be cancelled). This should be a fairly easy defence for the reigning champion. Expect a stoppage for Núñez within 10 rounds.
