Alycia Baumgardner Threatens Legal Action After Physical Altercation with Claressa Shields

The feud between two of women's boxing's biggest current stars came to a boiling point over this weekend, resulting in serious consequences for the sport's self-proclaimed "GWOAT." Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) has indefinitely banned undisputed heavyweight champion Claressa Shields from all of its events following a physical altercation with Alycia Baumgardner

The incident occurred Saturday night at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles during the "Rousey vs. Carano" MMA event, and Baumgardner is now threatening to escalate the situation legally.

The confrontation occurred in a private VIP section of the venue and was partially captured on viral cellphone footage. The video shows Baumgardner approaching Shields and extending her hand, which Shields immediately slapped away before security rushed in to separate the two decorated champions.

A slowed-down version of the video was released by Fight Hype, possibly showing that Baumgardner may have verbally provoked Shields:

The bad blood between the two has been boiling for years, intensified recently by Shields publicly criticizing Baumgardner's performances and accusing her of performance-enhancing drug use.

Jake Paul's Company Bans Shields

MVP, the promotional company founded by Jake Paul, issued a stern statement on Monday announcing the disciplinary action (via MVP on X):

"Effective immediately, Claressa Shields is banned from all MVP events until further notice," the promotion declared.

The statement posted by MVP established that physical contact outside of sanctioned competition would not be ignored.

"There is a time and a place for fighter tension and banter, but to physically attack a fellow athlete while there as a guest inside a private VIP area is unacceptable," the statement read.

MVP further distanced itself from the incident by stating that it "reflects poorly on MVP and women's sports, which we have worked tirelessly to uplift... MVP maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for hostile, threatening, or aggressive behavior toward fighters, staff, media, or guests at any of our events.”

Alycia Threatens Legal Action

Baumgardner, the undisputed junior lightweight champion, broke her silence on Monday with a formal statement that strongly contradicted Shields' narrative.

"The situation that occurred on Saturday was unprovoked and entirely consistent with the individual involved," Baumgardner wrote on social media, characterizing the event as an assault.

Moving beyond a war of words on social media, Baumgardner signaled her intention to pursue the matter in court. She confirmed the "situation has been and will continue to be handled legally and professionally."

This legal threat adds a significant layer of gravity to the incident, potentially moving the rivalry from a promotional beef to a courtroom battle.

Saturday's incident was not the first physical run-in between the two fighters, who compete roughly 30 pounds apart.

During a fight event in April 2024, Shields also slapped Baumgardner's hand away during a face-to-face confrontation:

Given the massive weight disparity and their history of failed negotiations, a sanctioned professional bout between the two remains highly unlikely, leaving these outside-the-ring clashes as the only outlet for their hostility.
