Jake Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) might be famous for regularly stirring up the hornet’s nest with his often-questionable actions. However, one cannot deny the contributions that he has made to women’s boxing, especially by bringing it to a wider audience.
The biggest fight in this series is undoubtedly the Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) vs. Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs) showdown, and now, with the duo gearing up for a trilogy fight, Serrano wasted no time in talking about Paul’s influence in her life and in women’s boxing.
During her recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Serrano was asked if what Paul and MVP have done with her career has served as a source of inspiration for
“Listen, Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, MVP, have changed my life completely. They have changed the world of female boxing,” she said while admitting that she is proud to be a part of the team.
Serrano’s words ring true because, in the beginning, there were multiple raised eyebrows and questionable glances as Paul ventured into the promotions of women’s boxing. She mentioned that during that time, she took a leap of faith with Paul and Bidarian after meeting them personally and getting to know the path they wanted to take in women’s boxing too.
Paul has also been a proponent of better pay for female boxers. Serrano stated that when she fought her first co-main event (against Taylor during Paul vs Mike Tyson), he had even ensured that the entire fight card made the most money that they’d ever made.
A seven-figure paycheck might not seem like a lot for boxers (it is), but it should be mentioned that Serrano had previously acknowledged while talking on Eddie Hearn’s podcast that she was fighting for $1,500 and $4,000 paydays despite being a world champion.
“I got paid peanuts. Sometimes, I got paid nothing, just to fight, just to maintain. But that’s the difference with Jake Paul and these women, now that they see that we’re making, me and Katie, millions. Just making noise and my fanbase, how much it grew under Jake Paul,” she said. “Now they want to come along.”
Serrano and Taylor will be headlining an all-woman card at the Madison Square Garden on July 12. Meanwhile, the card also features a packed list of exciting fights.
The main card will see Savannah Marshall face Shadasia Green while Ellie Scotney tests her mettle against Yamileth Mercado. On the other hand, the preliminary card is nothing less of a spectacle in itself, showcasing fights including Cherneka Johnson vs. Shurretta Metcalf and Chantelle Cameron vs. Jessica Camara, to name a few.
