According to Andre Ward, Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) needs to take a break.
In a few days, Berlanga will test his mettle against the pound-for-pound king, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs), in a potentially sensational showdown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. With Alvarez’s WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on the line, Ward was sure to give Berlanga a few pointers to up his game.
During a trip to Berlanga’s camp, Ward stressed the importance of taking days off from training. “That’s like a hack bro. People, they get it twisted man. They think more is better. That whole no days off, that’s probably one of the craziest, dumbest quotes you could say bro,” he said. “No days off; you’re going to be 50 percent less than what you should be.”
Ward further warned him that while his mind might be in the notion that he is ready to the fight, having trained without a break, his body might have a hard time keeping up with the performance requirements. This was when Berlanga expressed concerns about Alvarez potentially trying to break his will owing to his ring craft and experience. He also mentioned that whatever he throws at Alvarez might even be used against him.
“That’s the thing with these vets and stuff like, even in most championships, you gotta know that. It’s like a basketball game right, like every team going on a run. Like a 10-2 run, that’s a storm. They went on a 12-0 run like they just had a moment. When guys step on the gas like that, that’s when you have to remain calm, and you just gotta stay dogging and focused,” Ward responded. “I don’t care what he throwing at you at that championship level. But you gotta weather that stuff and keep your mind about you.”
On the other hand, Alvarez is confident that Berlanga would have a hard time beating him. In their recent fiery presser, the champ made it a point to open a few wounds with his statements.
“It is going to be very difficult for him,” he said. “I never overlook any fighter. He is young, a good fighter and is strong, but I’ve been in there with everybody and have so much experience. I’m strong and have a lot of talent – I’m just the best.”
