Filling the co-main slot for the card headlined by Diego Pacheco vs. Steven Nelson, Andy Cruz (5-0, 2 KOs) turned in a dominant, one-sided performance against Omar Salcido (20-2, 14 KOs). All three judges scored it (99-91, 98-92 & 98-92) for Cruz as he earned his fifth win and the first of the year.

The first round was a feel-out round for both fighters as Cruz used his high-level footwork to set up his shots. Salcido threw wide shots and landed a few, but none were eye-catching. Cruz’s accuracy was evident right from the start. Cruz began raising his punch output in the second round as his confidence increased every second that passed in the round. Salcido did not appear to have a Plan B, as Cruz was doing what he wanted to do throughout the round.

Cruz looked comfortable in the third round and was on cruise control. Cruz’s four-punch combination was effective and gave Salcido a ton of problems. Salcido showed some frustration as he lunged with a few of his shots. Things got interesting in the fourth round as Cruz landed a hard left hook that buzzed Salcido. Then, when Cruz followed the left hook with a four-punch combination, Salcido landed a straight right hand that forced Cruz to reset for a second.

In the fifth round, Cruz controlled the pace but he had a moment where he lost focus and was caught by a short, check left hook by Salcido. It was the best moment for Salcido up to this point of the fight. The sixth round was more of Cruz showing his dominance. Specifically, Cruz would take half a step back and land a straight right hand, which Salcido had no answer for every time Cruz landed it.

Rd 7 Cruz was in complete control throughout round seven as he switched back and forth from a conventional stance to southpaw and back. Rounds eight through ten were all Cruz dominating with his combinations as Salcido couldn’t pull the trigger fast enough on his counter punches. Cruz almost knocked out Salcido in the last round but ran out of time.
