Bob Arum does not want Tyson Fury to come out of retirement amid increasing speculation that he will fight Anthony Joshua.
Fury is the former WBC Heavyweight Champion and former unified heavyweight champion who has achieved generational wealth. However, the latter part of his career ended in defeat, as he suffered two losses to Oleksander Usyk. The first fight meant he missed out on becoming the first Undisputed Heavyweight Champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. He had the opportunity to avenge the Usyk defeat, but it was not for undisputed since the Ukrainian had vacated his IBF Belt.
However, Fury came up short once again as Usyk retained his titles. Fury was unhappy with the scoring in both fights, feeling he had done enough to win. However, most of the boxing community had Usyk winning, with many feeling Fury was no longer at his peak. His defeats also ended any hopes of a trilogy fight with Usyk. There is a narrative that Fury’s only biggest fight is against Joshua. They had previously signed for the fight only for Deontay Wilder to win his arbitration case, meaning that Fury had to rematch The Bronze Bomber. Fury then announced his retirement from the sport, ending any hopes that the fight will happen.
However, Fury has a tendency to retire only to then return. He did this when he defeated Dillian Whyte only to announce his retirement. Some have argued that this is a ploy he used to secure more money for a future Usyk fight. Reports indicate that he earned in excess of $100 million for the two Usyk bouts that secured his future from the sport, meaning Fury can now return on his own terms. It is still a mega fight, with some feeling that Fury would return if he was given a staggering figure. However, Arum does not want this to happen, as he urged Fury to focus on his life outside of boxing.
“I think Tyson Fury owes it to himself and his family to remain happily retired. I believe he has a lot in front of him. He is a good communicator and is an entertainer, but I don’t think he should step in the ring again because I think he’s had enough. As you know. I’m not a Brit, so I’m not as fascinated by an Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury fight as a Brit may be.
So it doesn’t move me that he’s walking away from boxing and walking away from that fight. Still, even Arum admits he doesn’t know what path Fury will decide to take in the future. Tyson is a very outward kind of person,” he said. “He communicates well and reaches out and expresses what he thinks. But that being said, I really don’t know what deep down he’s going to do because I don’t think he really does,” Fury said
