Caleb Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) sure loves his advisor Al Haymon.
‘Sweethands’ signed with the Premier Boxing Champions’ founder in 2014 and has been a part of his stable since. However, their relationship goes much beyond that of a fighter and an advisor. In a recent interview, he made a heartfelt admission about Haymon’s impact on his life.
Talking at Andre Ward’s All The Smoke Fight, he opened up about his relationship with Haymon and the effect that he had on his career.
“You know it’s easy to talk about what people could do for you. It’s easy to talk about the positions that they can put you in. As athletes, as entertainers, lots of promises get made. Most get broken. All the promises that I’ve ever been told from Al Haymon have always, always been made. To the ‘T’,” he said.
Plant then spoke about a painful time in his life when his daughter Alia was hospitalized due to her medical condition. He revealed that Haymon regularly checked in on him and his daughter and was a constant source of support. He was then asked (by Ward) if there was a piece of advice from Haymon that he held close to his heart. “The best piece of advice I received was, ‘Take care of your body because it’s the only thing taking care of you.’ I always remember that,” he said.
Life wasn’t particularly easy for Plant after the birth of his daughter. In the same interview, he revealed that he lost a lot of opportunities at that time and had a major period of struggle prior to turning pro.
“I don’t want to put anybody on blast but I had a handful of people looking at me, wanting to sign me. After Alia was born and word got out that I have my daughter with all these issues, nobody picked up the phone. Nobody called me back. I was emailing people, nobody emailed me back,” he said.
Plant mentioned that manager Luis de Cubas had asked him to contact him once he was ready to turn pro. However, he had lost his number at that time, and it took a considerable amount of time to finally find it. “As soon as I called Luis, picked right up. Told him what I wanted to do. Sent the contract right away, and that always meant a lot to me,” he said.
