As he aims to get back to the top of the sport, a familiar voice from Canelo Alvarez’s past has called for him to completely overhaul his approach.

Canelo’s reign as undisputed super middleweight champion came to an abrupt end just last month. It is the first time in seven years he has been without a title.

Since losing convincingly to the undefeated Terence Crawford, the Mexican has not yet announced his next move, though he has already been linked with several possible opponents.

Now, the 35-year-old has been urged by a former business partner to significantly alter his training camp, regardless of whether his next fight is a rare UK appearance or in his usual North American base.

Oscar De La Hoya, who has not held back in his criticism of Canelo since their falling out at Golden Boy Promotions, has now weighed in on what could be next for the Jalisco fighter.

Following Crawford’s dominant win over Canelo, the Olympic gold medalist did not hold back with his opinion on what needs to change if the Mexican wants to get back to the top – starting with a call for a new head coach.

“He (Canelo Alvarez) still has a chance to fight several more fights with the titles [on the line],” De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV.

“But he needs a new trainer,” he stated.

Veteran head coach Eddy Reynoso is the trainer in question. He has been a cornerstone of Canelo’s historic championship success, training the Mexican icon since he was 15 years old.

Since stepping away from the sport, De La Hoya has found success as a promoter, running Golden Boy Promotions.

He was also the man behind several major fights in the Jalisco star’s career, including Canelo’s 2013 title bout against Floyd Mayweather.
