The highly anticipated super-fight boxing fans have been eagerly awaiting was made official on Tuesday morning, triggering an avalanche of posts on social media from fans and media alike.
Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) will be defending his titles against Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) on September 13 in Las Vegas, NV, live worldwide on Netflix. UFC boss Dana White began the announcement by posting the following statement on social media:
“Turki wants to make the biggest fights that the fans want to see in boxing and this is right up my alley. Are you kidding me that the first boxing fight I’m going to get to promote is Canelo vs. Crawford? It’s literally a once-in-a-lifetime fight. Live on Saturday, September 13, streaming globally on Netflix, two of the GREATEST boxers in the sport will meet in a historic fight from Las Vegas.”
On Monday afternoon, I caused quite a stir on social media as FightsATW was being told that Netflix would be the one to host Canelo-Crawford and that the announcement would be made during WWE’s RAW on Netflix program. Although the post created a ton of noise, which even prompted Crawford to post a video from the gym an hour after the tweet gained a ton of heat, the RAW show began and ended without any announcement. Hours later, the announcement came via social media, but one has to wonder whether it was a missed opportunity not to announce it on RAW in front of a sold-out arena in Phoenix, AZ.
Now that Netflix is officially streaming the event worldwide on its platform for current subscribers, it must ensure things go smoother than they did for the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson event in November. On that night, over 100 million accounts streamed the event, which caused Netflix to “break” in a way where there was a ton of buffering, and the signal was going in and out, causing the stream to freeze. As big of a company Netflix is, let’s hope they have learned from those mistakes, leading to a much better viewing experience come September 13.
Along with the announcement, the press tour dates and venues were announced.
June 20- Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
June 22- Fanatics Fest NYC
June 27- T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV
The one that stands out the most is Fanatics Fest, which will take place at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC. Fanatics, a company specializing in sports memorabilia, trading cards, sports betting, and more, is hosting its second annual event after drawing 70,000 fans in 2024. There were over 500 top athletes, celebrities, and artists, making it one of the most attended events of its kind while boasting massive numbers across all social media platforms. This year, the company, led by its CEO, Michael Rubin, aims to bring in 100,000 fans for its event, which spans from June 20 to 22 in NYC.
Having Canelo-Crawford there is smart and a tactic used by Netflix for Paul-Tyson last year. The Fanatics event will draw fans from all age groups and demographics, so it’s the best way to promote a fight that merits the title of “super-fight.”
The only thing that remains is the venue, which doesn’t really matter as the fight itself is what everyone wants to see. Allegiant Stadium is currently hosting UNLV vs. Idaho State, and event organizers are trying to find a way to move the game off of that date. If they can’t, then the T-Mobile Arena will likely be the venue for the fight.
After the venue is announced and the press tour is over, then that’s when the real work begins for Canelo and Crawford. They will be in training camp, and the expectation is that Netflix will have shoulder programming for the event. From there, every sports program, whether on linear cable or social media, will be giving their takes on the fight and talking about how massive this fight will be for boxing. It will reach or surpass the hype of Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. Hopefully, it isn’t a stinker like Mayweather-Pacquiao ended up being.
FightsATW will be all over this event and will bring you exclusive content leading up to the mega event and on fight night.
