Canelo Alvarez has fighting men all around him, from coaches to training partners and apparently even a dentist who knocks people out.
The boxing icon is very detail oriented, and last year learned of a dentist who competes at Glory Kickboxing named Abraham Vidales. After hearing that his fellow Mexican can fix teeth by day and break them by night, he began working with him on creating custom mouthguards for fights.
For the past six years, Vidales has been balancing a fighting career in the ring with a life as a dentist. And he has success in both worlds, scoring knockouts in an impressive 82 per cent of his bouts. He opens the night at Glory Collision 8 in the Netherlands tomorrow night against Achraf Aasila.
Canelo Alvarez found out about Vidales last year, and the pair began to work together on custom mouthguards for the boxer. Now, Vidales spends time at the gym with the Mexican legend and has even learned some techniques he plans to implement in the ring at the GelreDome soccer stadium.
“People always find it ironic that I knock people out in the Glory Kickboxing ring and fix teeth outside,” Vidales said of his interesting career trajectory. “I’ve been a dentist for six years now and my clients always find it funny when they learn I fight.
“Because I fight and I am a dentist, Canelo Alvarez reached out to me last year to do his mouthguards. I’ve worked with him for his past three fights now. He is a legend of boxing and an icon in Mexico. So, working with him has been an honour and very surreal at times for me.
“One time I am in his kitchen and he is showing me some techniques that I learn from and will try implement into my own game. I’ve also been to watch him spar. The whole experience has been incredible and he is a very humble & down to earth person.”
