Canelo Alvarez is facing backlash following Jaime Munguia’s recent positive test for testosterone metabolites after his win over Bruno Surace.
Munguia is a stablemate of Canelo, as they both train under the guidance of Eddy Reynoso. Canelo had previously failed a test for clenbuterol, a banned substance he tested positive for in 2018. Alvarez took a hair follicle test, which showed no long-term usage, suggesting it was due to tainted meat. Canelo still received a sixth-month suspension, but it could have been much worse. Jermall Charlo implied that Canelo could still be on something. Charlo boxes Thomas LaManna this weekend in his first fight at 168. Charlo has spoken about his desire to box Canelo. However, his comments may do him more harm than good.
“Y’all think Canelo hasn’t been taking Clenbuterol for a long a** time? Y’all think he ain’t back on that s*** or y’all think it was just a mistake? MICRODOSING PEDS IN BOXING I got to Mexico all the time. I’m from Houston, Texas. I’m in Mexico all the time eating steak. I ain’t ever got caught for no s*** like that.
“They’re microdosing it. I’m not trying to put nobody out there. This is not just boxing. There are a lot of athletes all over the world. They make the drug right there to the line of disqualification, but they don’t surpass it. So, they’re not getting caught for it. A lot of these fighters are on all kinds of s***,” Charlo said
Despite the backlash, Canelo has come out to back his colleagues. The Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion backed Reynoso, denying any suggestions that he had done any wrongdoing. However, Canelo’s own prior failed test does not add credibility to his stance, with many boxing fans also expressing their dissatisfaction.
“We believe in Jaime Munguia, who will surely clarify this soon. And what I want you to be very clear about is that Canelo Team isn’t giving him his supplements; Eddy is solely dedicated to training him. We’re 100% behind Munguía. Only he knows what happened. They’re throwing it at Eddy, but he doesn’t provide his nutrition. Eddy is just his coach,” Canelo stated
