Canelo Vs. Crawford Is Off – What’s Next?
Sipa USA

Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford will not be going ahead, leaving question marks over the Mexican’s next fight.

Reports initially indicated that a fight had been agreed to take place in Las Vegas on Mexican Independence Weekend. Canelo was expected to fight beforehand on Cinco de Mayo before facing Crawford. There were also reports that Canelo had agreed to face Jake Paul in May, which would have set up the Crawford fight.

Shakur Stevenson was confident that Crawford would beat Canelo. However, this no longer appears to be the case. It is not exactly clear why a Crawford-Canelo fight has been called off. But Alvarez must now explore other options.

“Honestly, I’ve been saying this for years now. I’m probably the first one that has been saying this – even before Terence was saying it. I always thought that his [Crawford’s] style versus Canelo, I think he beats Canelo. I’m not saying it’ll be an easy fight, but he can make it a very easy fight. That’s another thing too. I don’t think Canelo is walking through his punches,” Shakur said

Canelo Vs. Crawford

He could take on the IBF Super Middleweight Champion William Scull. Canelo was expected to face Scull last year before he was stripped. He chose to face Edgar Berlanga instead. The Berlanga fight proved more popular as it sold 650,000 PPVs and a produced a live gate of $17 million. Canelo breezed past him to secure a one-sided unanimous decision. Alvarez has already been undisputed at 168 pounds. A victory over Scull makes him undisputed once again.

There is also the opportunity to face David Benavidez. Benavidez is coming off one of the best wins of his career against David Morrell Jr. He defeated Morrell by a unanimous decision in his second fight at 175 pounds. That means he is mandatory for the winner of Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev, who rematch for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Title. Benavidez could easily sit and wait for that next fight. But bouts against Canelo do not often present themselves. Benavidez has said that he would only take that fight at 175 pounds, meaning that Canelo would have to move up.

What’s Next?

Alternatively, Alvarez could face Morrell. Morrell’s future is unclear following his first defeat. He had moved up to 175 pounds after failing to get the Canelo fight. But he is not in a mandatory position to fight for the undisputed light heavyweight title, meaning he would have to fight lower-ranked opposition at light heavyweight.

Morrell could return to 168 pounds and target the big names. A fight against Canelo could make sense since Morrell is no longer the feared fighter that he once was. Canelo could be persuaded to take that fight. Despite having some success against Benavidez, The Mexican Monster was able to overpower him during the second half of the fight. Canelo would back himself to do the same. Fans had plenty to say about where Canelo could go next.
