The Mexican star has not stepped into the ring since suffering a defeat to Terence Crawford in an undisputed super middleweight title fight last September — a loss that handed him his third career defeat and ended his reign as the division's dominant force.

Mbilli arrived at the full WBC championship through circumstance rather than a traditional title fight. Crawford's retirement following his victory over Canelo opened the belt, and Mbilli was elevated from interim to full champion at 168 pounds — a promotion that gives him the legitimate title status Canelo needs to chase without the pedigree of a long-standing reign behind it.
