Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has suffered another setback after the ex-WBC Middleweight Champion was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to reports, Chavez was apprehended on July 2. This was shortly after his loss to Jake Paul, as the Mexican came out second best in a unanimous decision loss. The arrest was made in relation to several factors. The boxer allegedly overstayed on his visa, as per the DHS (U.S. Department of Homeland Security). The DHS also alleged “multiple fraudulent statements” in relation to his application for Permanent Residence, while there is an arrest warrant in Mexico for his “involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives.”

To make matters worse, the DHS has reason to believe that Chavez Jr. is “an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel.” Michael Goldstein, who is Chavez Jr.’s attorney, has spoken out, stating that the claims are “outrageous.” However, things do not look good as Chavez is facing expedited removal from the United States back to Mexico.

Reaction

“This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate with an active arrest warrant for trafficking guns, ammunition, and explosives was arrested by ICE. It is shocking the previous administration flagged this criminal illegal alien as a public safety threat, but chose to not prioritize his removal and let him leave and COME BACK into our country. Under President Trump, no one is above the law—including world-famous athletes. Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said

“The current allegations are outrageous and simply another headline to terrorize the community,” Goldstein said

“We have full confidence in his innocence. We firmly believe that the proper course is to allow the competent authorities to carry out their work without external pressure or speculation,” Chavez family statement
