A recent update casts doubt on a potential clash between two female boxing icons
The beef between Claressa Shields and Laila Ali reached its peak in July, with tension building to a level rarely seen in women’s boxing. At the center of it all was a $15 million offer from Team Shields—designed to set up a GWOAT vs. Legend super fight that could have been one of the sport’s most historic moments. But a recent update from Shields herself may have fans second-guessing if the bout will ever happen.
During an interview with TMZ, Shields didn’t hold back when asked where things stood. According to her, Ali’s camp is not interested in the fight.
‘Laila and her representatives have told us no, and she doesn’t want to fight. I wouldn’t fight me either—I understand that she’s scared,’ Shields said. She added that she has no shortage of opportunities ahead and is fine with Ali turning down the bout: ‘I’m glad she said no. I didn’t want to have to put the paws on her.’
While Ali hasn’t publicly said she won’t accept, she has insisted she’ll respond to the $15 million proposal on her own time. Shields suggested Ali’s team sees the fight as beneath them, claiming, ‘She wants to be in the public eye and keep her name tied to me because I’m young and poppin.’
With Ali seemingly out, Shields—now a promotional free agent—has no shortage of options. A bout with Shadasia Green, a rematch with Franchon Crews, or even a drop in weight to face Olympic teammate Mikaela Mayer could all be on the table if the numbers make sense. Regardless of which path she chooses, Shields appears ready to move forward and keep her momentum, ensuring that her next step continues to elevate her already historic career.
