Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) is all set to fight for Fabio Wardley’s (20-0-1, 19 KOs) WBO heavyweight title on Saturday. However, this is not a mere fight for him; it is his chance to get his “girlfriend” back.
Talking to the Ring Magazine, Dubois admitted that it hurt to lose his title to Oleksandr Usyk in July last year.
“It’s just one of those things. It’s like a relationship ending, and you know how you feel when you end a relationship?” he said. “But I’m looking to get my girlfriend back. You make some mistakes and the relationship doesn’t work out and then you’ve got to start again.”
In their rematch at Wembley, Usyk defeated Dubois in a much clearer and more decisive way than their first meeting. This time, there was no controversy; Usyk controlled the fight. In the fifth round, Usyk dropped Dubois twice, with the second knockdown ending the fight by knockout and restoring the former’s undisputed heavyweight status. The upcoming fight against Wardley is seen as a form of redemption for Dubois, as it’s his chance to show he hasn’t been psychologically or technically derailed by his defeats to Usyk. In fact, Wardley represents a dangerous but more stylistically manageable test.
Despite all this, he isn’t letting those losses get to his head, rather drowning himself in preparation for the upcoming showdown.
“I think I fought against the best fighter of a generation, so I’m not really down or nothing, I’m just thinking about how we move forward and about a lot of personal things. I’ve got to go back to the drawing board and come again. I feel like we’re going to get it right this time though, with the training and how everything is going to be perfect, I just have a feeling,” he said, confident that his redemption arc is set for Saturday. “It’s just a process and, to be honest, I was straight back on it and looking to line up who’s next, watching the heavyweight division and seeing who’s going to be next and I’m glad I’ve got this opportunity.”
Talking about his upcoming fight, there is no denying that he is extremely excited about the opportunity to redeem himself.
“I was elated when I heard the news,” he said while talking about the Wardley fight. “This is my chance from God, he’s given me this opportunity and I can’t let myself down or my team down and this is the time to dig deeper than ever before. I feel like the luckiest guy in boxing.”
