Danny Garcia vs. Daniel Gonzalez takes place on October 18, as we look at how the pair will approach the fight.
Garica has his final boxing bout in what will be an emotional time for the 37-year-old. He is the former champion at 140 and 147. He was the unified WBA(Super version), WBC, Ring magazine junior welterweight champion. He added the WBC welterweight title too. However, he is not the same fighter. Garcia has boxed only four times since 2020, with his sole win during that period being against Jose Benavidez Jr. in 2022.
Garcia’s last bout was a loss to the WBA Middleweight Champion Erislandy Lara on September 14, 2024. Meanwhile, Gonzalez has won his last two fights. Victories over Keane McMahon and Michael Anderson have given him a confidence boost. He now has the chance to end his career with arguably the biggest win.
“This feels like the ending of my movie. We’ve got to end it with a win. I feel rejuvenated. This feels more like it’s my first fight than my last. I’m ready to go in there and do my thing. Gonzalez is hungry. He’s got everything to gain and I’ve got everything to lose. I have to train myself like I’m fighting for a world title. That’s how I always train.
“I’m sparring the young hungry lions who are trying to beat me up. I had to keep feeding my fans in Brooklyn. They made me who I am today, so it was a perfect place for this fight. “I fought everybody. I never ducked anyone. I fought whoever they put in front of me and that’s why fans love me. I’m proud of everything I’ve been through inside and outside of the ring. And I’m still here,” Garcia said
Garcia’s approach will be measured and calculated, relying heavily on his signature timing and counter-punching ability. His recent loss to Erislandy Lara, where he struggled to cut distance and engage, serves as a reminder of his diminished activity level. Garcia’s best weapon remains his powerful left hook, which he will look to time as Gonzalez comes forward. His strategy will be to allow Gonzalez to lead the dance, drawing him into range before unleashing concussive counters, with the goal of securing a definitive stoppage.
Gonzalez will approach this fight with the aggression of a man who has nothing to lose. Gonzalez’s style is known to be aggressive, and he will look to use constant pressure and a high work rate to exploit Garcia’s inactivity and perceived decline. If Gonzalez can maintain a high pace and make the fight ugly, he has the hunger necessary to prevent Garcia from dictating.
