Former two-division world champion Danny Garcia has formally announced that he will bid “Farewell to Brooklyn” on October 18 live from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
The 37-year-old Garcia from Philadelphia, PA, will face 35-year-old Daniel Gonzalez (22-4-1, 7 KOs) from Queens, NY, in a scheduled 10-round fight. This will mark Garcia’s 10th fight at the Barclays Center, which goes back to his Brooklyn debut, where he scored a fourth-round knockout over Erik Morales .
In the press release, Garcia said, “The fans have supported me the whole way since I first fought here and have made Brooklyn feel like my home outside of Philly,” said Garcia. “There’s nothing like a big fight night at Barclays Center. I had to do this show for the fans and show them how much I’ve appreciated them this entire time. The best way to say goodbye is by fighting here one last time and giving them a tremendous night of boxing full of rising young talent. It’s gonna be the DSG show in Brooklyn once again on October 18!”
Garcia’s announcement comes almost a full year removed from the ninth-round stoppage loss to WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara. That night, it was clear that Garcia was a shell of his former self, and the thought was that he would end up announcing his retirement shortly after. In multiple interviews, Garcia stated that he would only return to the ring one last time if he could promote the show himself. This card, on October 18, will do just that as his Swift Promotions will be the lead promoter of the event.
His opponent, Gonzalez, is a known fighter in the tri-state area, as Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing promotes him. Gonzalez has been inactive with a record of 3-2 in the five fights he’s had since April 2021. Regardless, Gonzalez is full of confidence going into what could be his last big fight.
“I’ve been grinding in silence, locked in that gym and waiting on my shot,” said Gonzalez. “Now it’s here. I’m stepping into the ring with a future Hall of Famer in Danny Garcia at Barclays Center. I ain’t coming to just show up, I’m coming to shock the world and prove how great I am. Life’s about timing, and on October 18, it’s ‘Gallo’ time.”
