David Benavidez Eyeing Light Heavyweight Elites
Alberto E. Tamargo

David Benavidez was able to defend his secondary WBC light heavyweight championship against David Morrell.  With Canelo and Terence Crawford setting their sights for each other in September. Benavidez is now targeting the winner of the rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

That plan could take a detour if Bivol gets revenge on Beterbiev to even up the score. But lets say that doesn’t happen. Then Benavidez would immediately line up to fight Beterbiev. Would Benavidez be biting off more than he can chew with Beterbiev?

Style wise this would be a bad matchup for David Benavidez. There’s no way that he’d be able to stalk down the powerful hard hitting champion like he’s use to doing with smaller fighters than him. Beterbiev would walk through a lot of his punches and would easily connect on Benavidez which could scream disaster for him.

Different fighters present a different problem for Benavidez if Bivol was the guy. Bivol is an excellent boxer and uses his jab to effectively create space to the point where he’s not easy to be stalked. He’s efficient enough to bother aggressive fighters with this boxing ability and footwork. He’s very fundamentally sound and has been in the ring with Beterbiev who’s bigger and stronger than Benavidez so he will not be intimidated. Bivol’s skillset will present problems for Benavidez as he will not be able to be the bully in the ring.

Underdog regardless

David Benavidez would be the underdog against each fighter due to his style not being a good fit against fighters that can box and really hurt you. That’s exactly while I believe that both fighters would get the nod over Benavidez. But despite all of that, in boxing all it takes for one punch to change everything and thanks to that  belief is exactly why we’ll tune it to see what happens.
