Oscar De La Hoya has criticized Canelo Alvarez’s decision to duck the Jake Paul fight in his latest segment of Clap Back Thursdays.
Reports indicated that Canelo had signed a deal with Jake Paul for a fight on Cinco de Mayo. However, it was later announced that Alvarez had inked a four-fight deal with the Saudis as he will face the IBF Super Middleweight Champion William Scull in May. That is going to be followed by a fight against Terence Crawford in September on Mexican Independence Weekend, which could be for the Undisputed Super Middleweight Championship. But The Problem Child announced on social media that Canelo had signed a deal for the fight before pulling out.
Jake bashed Canelo for not showing loyalty to Al Haymon and the PBC, stating that he was simply chasing money. Alvarez is entering into the latter part of his career. He is also a four-weight world champion, making him one of the biggest stars in the sport. He has the right to face whoever he wishes, even if he has been criticized for not facing David Benavidez.
De La Hoya and Canelo have had a poor relationship historically ever since Alvarez left Golden Boy Promotions. The feud escalated during the presser for Jaime Munguia’s fight with Canelo. Alvarez accused De La Hoya of trying to steal money from him. Oscar responded by stating that this was defamation. The animosity has continued since then, with De La Hoya not mincing his words.
“Jake Paul pointed out that Canelo has zero loyalty to anyone and he couldn’t be more correct. Canelo I was a little hurt when you left Golden Boy Promotions back in 2015, but then you did the same thing to Eddie Hearn, and now Al Hayman, who you said was the best promoter ever just months ago. You’re simply in this for the money. You certainly aren’t in it for the fans, nor for helping the Mexican people. You’ve never done a damn thing to help the Mexican community, and you’ll go out of your way not to give them the fights they want to see.
“Instead of fighting David Benavidez. You’re fighting William Scull. Really. You really said you won’t fight David Benavidez because I don’t want to give him a payday. Because he doesn’t deserve it. You’re supposed to create bad blood and excitement for the fans to enjoy. But you won’t fight a guy because he’s being mean to you. Canelo, you’ve created the diva era in boxing. Other fighters look up to you, and it’s your fault. This is the softest, money hungry era of all time in boxing,” De La Hoya said
Nevertheless, Canelo still has two fights remaining after Scull and Crawford. That sets up the possibility of facing Benavidez. Outside of Benavidez, there is still a big fight against Dmitry Bivol for the rematch. Alternatively, there could be an undisputed opportunity at 175 pounds. But for now, Canelo has plenty of doubters to prove wrong.
