Conor Benn is targeting the biggest bouts, but his career is being wrecked by bad career management.
Benn suffered his first loss in a unanimous decision defeat to Chris Eubank Jr. He took the fight at 160, as he moved up from 154 after having boxed at junior middleweight for his last two bouts. He is a 147 fighter, where he had most of his success, although many are questioning his wins after his failed VADA tests for Clomiphene. Benn has been linked with a rematch against Eubank, which will likely take place at 160. However, there are questions if there will be a rehydration clause for Eubank given the struggles he faced to make weight for their fight. Chris Eubank Sr. was vocal about Benn’s career suffering with the move up in weight.
“The performance? Championship rounds, standing toe-to-toe, the credit I want to give to Conor, I told you he was a superior fighter,’ Eubank Sr told talkSPORT. ‘But he shouldn’t be fighting at 160 or 156. He’s a 147 fighter. What couldn’t he do around the world? He’s been destroyed by the people who are handling him and they have to be brought to account. Do your job, do your job, do your job,” Eubank Sr. said
Benn could now be making another mistake amid the news that he has called out Shakur Stevenson. Shakur is the WBC Lightweight Champion, who faces William Zepeda in his next fight on July 12. Stevenson stopped Josh Padley in his last bout, as he aims to unify at 135. A fight against Benn would be tough to make.
Shakur is not the biggest puncher, meaning it is much more difficult to move up through the weight classes. Shakur would most likely need a catchweight. Benn would find it tough to get back down to 147 or a 145-pound catchweight. This is especially true since he is being linked with a rematch against Eubank in September. Eddie Hearn is behind a Shakur fight, but is he wrecking Benn’s career?
“I spoke to Shakur. It’s funny. They were both texting me today about the fight at the same time. Conor fired me a text, saying, ‘Have you seen this? Shakur messaged me, saying, ‘I’ll fight him.’ He talked about 147. I seen some 154 stuff. Listen, at the moment, Shakur has got Zepeda.
“Conor has got Eubank. After, we’ll make it happen. Everyone wants to fight Conor Benn. Shakur is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Let’s make the great fights happen. Yeah, that’s what we expect. We’ve already been told September 27th is a likely date. His Excellency [Turki Alalshikh] said it live on air, and we expect that to happen in September,” Hearn said
