With one of boxing’s biggest names getting involved, talk of a fight between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua is picking up steam.
Jake Paul made his return to the ring last month, stepping back in for the first time since his controversial win over Mike Tyson. This time, he took on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Anaheim.
He was booed by the crowd despite securing a unanimous decision over the ex-WBC middleweight champion, but the win brought him a step closer to his championship ambitions. In his post-fight remarks, he dropped several high-profile names – among them former heavyweight titleholder Anthony Joshua.
Paul’s win over Chavez Jr. has moved him into the WBC cruiserweight top 15, coming in at No. 14.
While there was early talk of a potential bout with Zurdo Ramirez, it now looks like discussions around a fight with Joshua are starting to build some momentum.
Sports promoter Eddie Hearn and Paul haven’t always seen eye to eye, but the Matchroom boss has said he’s open to the idea of the fight.
And in his latest comments, Hearn revealed that Turki Alalshikh is now involved in the talks, which could be a big step forward for making it happen.
Paul recently met with Alalshikh to smooth things over between them, and Hearn says Turki is now interested in putting together a fight between Paul and Joshua.
“Yeah (there have been discussions), I was with his excellency yesterday, obviously he’d met Jake Paul, I think he would like to do it, you know, but it’s mad enough to happen.
“It’s not something we expected, it’s not something we’re targeting, if it’s offered to us, I would be shocked if AJ didn’t accept it, why wouldn’t you?
“The plan for us is to fight Tyson Fury next year, if we can squeeze in Jake Paul along the way and you guys want AJ to end this whole process, he’ll gladly do it”.
While the former heavyweight champion still has his sights set on a fight with Tyson Fury, taking on Paul would almost certainly bring in huge money.
Even so, the 35-year-old hasn’t said anything about a potential fight with Paul, nor has he made his position clear.
