Anthony Joshua has a significant choice to make ahead of December 19, according to a former champion.
From the moment Joshua and Jake Paul first faced off, the difference between them was clear, even without considering their respective boxing skills.
The fight is scheduled for the Kaseya Center in Miami and will be streamed live on Netflix.
While ‘AJ’ is clearly the more accomplished boxer, he is not immune to upsets.
And a fighter with 38 bouts under his belt believes how close this contest ends up being will come down to how the former heavyweight titleholder decides to approach it.
Paul deserves credit for stepping into the ring with someone like Joshua, even if most expect him to be badly outmatched.
Whether he can hang in there at all is another matter entirely, one that Lucas Browne thinks could come down to Joshua’s mindset on the night.
Browne, who has recently transitioned into bare knuckle boxing and is set for a title shot on November 22, spoke about this during a preview of his own fight. His boxing career included bouts against names like Dillian Whyte and James Toney.
While previewing his upcoming BKB heavyweight title fight, Browne also weighed in on Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul:
“When it comes to fighting, everyone has a chance. A chance of a shot, yeah, 100 percent. But, if Anthony Joshua is smart and goes back to a little bit more of the amateur style like I said, Jake Paul won’t touch him. If he goes to amateur in his head, he’ll be fine. If he wants to stand in the pocket and brawl, very different story,” he told Bloody Elbow.
As noted earlier, Joshua has been on the receiving end of some major knockouts during his career.
One of the most memorable came against Andy Ruiz in 2019. ‘AJ’ knocked Ruiz down early, but as the fight turned into a brawl, it was Joshua who found himself repeatedly sent to the canvas.
In his bout against Francis Ngannou, there were questions about whether the power of Ngannou could expose similar vulnerabilities in the Briton. Instead, it was Ngannou who suffered a brutal knockout by round two.
If Joshua approaches December 19 with that same discipline and technical edge, Paul could be in for a very short night.
