Founder, Chairman & CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya gives an exclusive update on WBC interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs), unified (WBA, WBO & Ring Magazine) minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo (12-0, 9 KOs) and a “big event” in NYC at the Madison Square Garden.
At today’s media workout in downtown San Diego, CA, De La Hoya was all smiles and even a little giddy as his star fighter, Ryan Garcia, looked strong and focused, and that is good news for Golden Boy. FightsATW was in attendance and chatted with De La Hoya about a few of his A+ fighters, which led to him discussing a future fight at MSG.
Only two months ago, Ortiz had a stellar performance against Israil Madrimov, which sent waves throughout the junior middleweight division. After the fight, things got quiet, and a few weeks after his big win, there were reports that Ortiz had injured his hand and wouldn’t be ready until the summer. His promoter, De La Hoya, confirmed those reports, saying that Ortiz had a minor injury to his hand, which he labeled a “boxer’s fracture,” and that it was nothing too serious.
While at the media roundtable for the fight card Golden Boy is hosting on Saturday at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, CA, De La Hoya expressed being anxious to speak to the 27-year-old Ortiz about his future plans. “We are going to sit down with him next week,” De La Hoya told FightsATW. “I plan on bringing him back in June, July or August. We will be back with Vergil really soon.”
Whether those plans are to have Ortiz face former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. (which has been speculated on social media) or another opponent, one thing is for sure: Ortiz has shown to be the all-action, high-level fighter everyone wants to see.
The unified champion Collazo is one of the minimumweight division’s most polished and exciting fighters. After knocking out Edwin Cano in the fifth round of their fight in March, Collazo spoke about headlining a card in his native Puerto Rico. De La Hoya said he’s happy with how Collazo has performed, but in order for a big event to be held in Puerto Rico, Collazo would need the right dance partner.
“When the time is right,” said De La Hoya about Collazo headlining in Puerto Rico. “When there is an opponent that has a big enough name, then we can make it a big event.” There aren’t any big names in the minimumweight division, but one has to think that an undisputed world title fight could be the one that gets Collazo to Puerto Rico.
Although De La Hoya is hesitant about Collazo headlining in Puerto Rico, he is however wanting him to be part of something big in NYC. “I want to put together a big New York card at the Madison Square Garden with Charles (Conwell), Oscar (Collazo), my new heavyweight, and all of my East Coast fighters.”
De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions seem to be running off newfound energy, which hopefully means more shows with fights that the fans want to see.
