Floyd Mayweather’s big money rematch with Manny Pacquiao most certainly will not be happening at Sphere on September 19.

The boxing legends appear to still have an agreement to fight on that date in Las Vegas, but the move that was rumoured last week was made official today. Eagles have confirmed a string of new dates for their residency at the popular venue, with September 19 one that stands out on the calendar.

It always seemed unlikely that the show would land in such a room, given the exorbitant costs that come with staging an event there even with Netflix’s massive budget. It is also not tied to any casino in Vegas, making it less appealing to sport promoters and gambling companies.

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao 2 makes way for Eagles concert

BoxingScene broke the news last week that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s long-awaited rematch would be switching from Sphere to another Vegas venue. And it has now been confirmed as rock legends Eagles have announced their own gig on September 19.

Musical acts tend to book the eye-catching venue for lengthy residencies in an effort to spread out the cost of staging such a monumental visual event. UFC 306 was the only sporting event to ever take place there, and is believed to have cost Dana White and Turki Alalshikh tens of millions.

In the BoxingScene article, an anonymous source in the industry was quoted as saying: “It made no sense to put it at The Sphere – it’s not connected to a casino.”

Mayweather is currently slated to compete in two exhibitions before the highly-contentious rematch with Pacquiao. He was supposed to take on Mike Tyson last month in Africa, and has a June 27 date with kickboxer Mike Zambidis booked in Athens which has actually been promoted and has tickets on sale.
