Frank Warren Reveals Why Tyson Fury Might Not Wait Around for Anthony Joshua

Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has been largely absent from the boxing ring following his second loss against Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs). The Gypsy King had initially announced plans to retire. However, according to promoter Frank Warren, there is a strong chance the former champ will return. While fans hope for an Anthony Joshua showdown, Warren highlighted why it might not come to fruition.

In conversation with Sky Sports, Warren revealed that he is waiting for a response from Fury to deduce the plans for 2026.

“He’s got to confirm it and sit down and work out when it’s going to be. If we do that, then I’ll be delighted; we can announce it. But he’s indicated to me and I know to a lot of people that he does want to carry on. So, we’ll see,” said Warren.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, had previously mentioned that he was hopeful to see Joshua face Fury in 2026.

Warren also agreed on the possibility of the duo facing each other, stating that it might be a fight that Fury would like to see happen. However, he also pointed out that Joshua was eyeing a tune-up fight and added that Fury may not be interested in sitting around waiting for it.

Meanwhile, he still believes that a trilogy fight between Fury and Usyk might be in the books.

“The fight he really wants is another go with Mr. Usyk; he really wants that. And they were great fights, really close fights, to watch. I’d watch that again. That’s the fight he wants. That’s the one he talks about all the time,” he said, adding that Fury will be unsurprisingly picky about the fights that he chooses. “He hasn’t got a lot of miles on the clock. He’s nobody’s fool; he’s a very smart guy, he knows better than you and me what he’s got left. He’s a fighting man, and if he decides that he’s going to move forward and do it, he’ll do it. He’s not a stupid guy who’s clutching at straws. He’ll only fight if he feels he can do it.”

“AJ Wants More Than Anything”

Meanwhile, this is a fight that Joshua is yearning for, says Matchroom boss Hearn. However, he believes that a tune-up is necessary for him to prepare for what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest fights of his career.

“It’s exactly what everybody wanted to hear. The thing that AJ wants more than anything is to fight Tyson Fury,” he said. “The most important thing is making sure he’s 110 per cent confident and ready to beat Tyson Fury. We need to be able to plan that for AJ to make sure that he’s in the best place possible for what will be the biggest moment of his career, I believe…He’s either going to have those two fights before Tyson Fury, if that can get made, or he’s going to have the one fight in February.”
