Fundora Vs. Thurman Verbally Agreed
Andy Abeyta/The Desert Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK

Sebastian Fundora, the WBC junior middleweight champion, has reached a verbal agreement to fight Keith Thurman on October 18 from Las Vegas.

Fundora has made two defenses of his WBC belt. Wins over Chordale Booker and Tszyu in the rematch have made him one of the leading names in the division. While has been linked with a unification, a win over Thurman would be one of the biggest names on his resume. Thurman, meanwhile, is no longer the same fighter who was once the unified welterweight champion. He recently came back from three years out of the ring to defeat Brock Jarvis. Thurman has earmarked the likes of Errol Spence, Jaron Ennis and Terence Crawford for some fights, but it has been to no avail. Now, Fundora gets the chance.

The Questions

For Thurman, this fight is a high-risk, high-reward situation. For a fighter who has been largely inactive and is now well past his prime, facing a dominant champion like Fundora is a massive gamble. A fight with Fundora gives him an immediate shot at a world title and a chance to re-establish himself as an elite fighter.

If he were to pull off a win, it would be a major comeback story and propel him back into the conversation for those superfights he desires. However, Fundora is a tall, aggressive, and relentless fighter with a strong track record. Thurman’s inactivity and the natural decline that comes with age could make him vulnerable.

For the fans, this fight is an intriguing matchup. Fundora is a relentless, high-volume puncher with an unusual height and reach for the weight class. Thurman, on the other hand, is a skilled and experienced boxer who relies on timing, power, and movement. Additionally, there are questions about whether Thurman truly belongs at junior middleweight, as he has spent most of his career at welterweight. The size and reach advantage of Fundora could be too much for Thurman to handle, leaving many questions unanswered.
