Unbeaten super middleweight contender Hamzah Sheeraz believes he could be on the cusp of boxing’s biggest opportunity: a shot at undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez. Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KOs) announced himself as a serious force at 168 pounds in July when he dismantled New York’s Edgar Berlanga in Flushing. In what was expected to be a competitive fight, the 26-year-old from Slough dominated from start to finish, scoring three knockdowns before securing a fifth round stoppage. The emphatic win instantly put his name in the conversation at super middleweight.

Speaking on the 5Live Boxing Podcast, Sheeraz said he sees a potential Alvarez fight as a realistic possibility.
“The Canelo fight, it’s there. It’s the one, providing he goes through Crawford with ease. And I believe he will.”
Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) defends his undisputed title against Terence Crawford on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Should he prevail, Sheeraz thinks the path could open for their clash.
“Ideally for me, I’d like to face Canelo because the dynamics of the sport as they are now, you’ve got the opportunity to face one of the greatest fighters in boxing. So why not challenge myself and give it my all?”
Until someone dethrones Alvarez, the Mexican remains the unquestioned No. 1 at 168 pounds. But a crop of young, hungry challengers Christian Mbilli, Diego Pacheco, Osleys Iglesias, and now Sheeraz are all lining up for their chance.
Sheeraz acknowledged that while those fights would be exciting for boxing fans, none carry the global spotlight or financial reward of facing Alvarez. At 26, Sheeraz is likely to face all of his fellow contenders in due course, but the immediate goal is clear: seize the opportunity to fight a legend before Alvarez’s career winds down.
With his breakout performance against Berlanga, Sheeraz has positioned himself as one of the most intriguing new names in the division. Whether or not Alvarez calls his number after the Crawford fight, Sheeraz has ensured that he’ll be a fixture in super middleweight title discussions for years to come.
