Is Jake Paul Good For Boxing?

Jake Paul is a divisive figure in boxing, leading many to question whether he does more harm than good for boxing. 

Paul faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in his June 28 fight, as he continues his boxing journey. His only loss has come against Tommy Fury, as he came out second best in a split decision loss. That was the first time he had faced a pro boxer, as many questioned whether he had what it took at the top level.

He has largely fought MMA fighters, while his last fight against Mike Tyson divided many, as he was boxing a 59-year-old, raising many safety concerns. Chavez has only been in the ring twice since 2021, although his last bout was a win over former UFC fighter Uriah Hall last year. Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Chavez, says Jake is good for boxing.

“I commend Jake Paul for what he’s done from the start and how serious he’s taken boxing. This guy is probably the hardest worker in the game today. He has to prove himself from the back of the bunch and work himself up, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. Now he’s fighting Chavez, who’s a real fighter. He’s been a world champion.

It’s a huge step toward that world title that he wants, and it’s not far-fetched. Paul’s Feats

Paul is making serious headway in promoting women’s boxing. He has the biggest names under his MVP banner, including Amanda Serrano and Alycia Baumgardner. Paul has continued that momentum by signing Savannah Marshall, Chantelle Cameron and former UFC Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm. Eddie Hearn only holds Katie Taylor, who is entering the tailend of her career. Meanwhile, Ben Shalom’s Lauren Price is still waiting for her breakout fight. 

Paul has also helped boxers earn generational wealth. Serrano claimed that her purse was more than Katie Taylor’s $6 million that she received for their rematch on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card. The card broke records for being the most-watched streamed boxing event. Serrano has also secured a trilogy with Taylor, earning her another massive payday in the process. 

Jake has also managed to break the monopoly held by the established boxing promoters. He has gained an edge over Matchroom, Queensbury and Top Rank in women’s boxing. This is without the backing of the Saudis, who have worked closely with those three established promoters. Paul has entered a market for women’s boxing which could lead to Riyadh Season events if there is enough demand to see it. In doing so, Paul has also planned for his life outside of boxing in a promotional capacity.
