Is Rolly Romero Chasing Money?

Rolando Romero has called out David Benavidez and Manny Pacquiao for his next bouts, but is he just chasing money?

Romero is coming off the best victory of his career after he defeated Ryan Garcia via a unanimous decision. Few people were giving Romero a chance since Garcia’s return was hyped up after his no-contest against Devin Haney, where many believed he would come back stronger. Romero dropped Garcia in the second round with a left hook on the counter, as Ryan never wanted to engage.
Oscar De La Hoya has said that he would like Romero to have a rematch with Ryan, meaning Rolly could secure an even bigger payday. His stock has risen massively, while he has the resume to show he can face the big names, having previously done so against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz.

However, Romero’s eyes are on bigger fights. He has called out Pacquiao, who will make his comeback to the sport at 46 when he takes on Mario Barrios. That fight is for the WBC Welterweight Title, as Pacquiao aims to make history by becoming one of the oldest world champions ever. Pacquiao has reportedly said that he would like to face Gervonta Davis next in what would be a mega bout. However, Romero has also positioned himself to take the Manny fight. He boxes at 147 pounds, while Davis boxes 135, making a Rolly fight more realistic.

Romero’s Future

Romero has also said he would like to face David Benavidez. Benavidez is the current WBC Light Heavyweight Champion. He secured the title after Dmitry Bivol vacated, as the latter chose to pursue a potential trilogy with Artur Beterbiev instead. A Romero fight against Benavidez is very unlikely due to the differences in weight class. Romero would have to jump up three weight classes since it is unlikely for Benavidez to come back down 168. Benavidez had only expressed he could do so for the Canelo Alvarez fight.

Outside of that, there are numerous other fighters Romero could face. He has been linked with Devin Haney, who is coming off an unconvincing victory against Jose Ramirez. The Dream received a huge amount of backlash for failing to engage, as the fight produced the fifth-lowest number of punches landed ever, as per CompuBox.

Romero also has the regular title, so he could target a bout with the full champion, Jaron Ennis. Ennis is currently struggling to get the other two champions in the division, Mario Barrios and Brian Norman Jr., as part of his attempts to become undisputed. A fight with Romero would keep him busy, but Rolly has said it is only Pacman or Benavidez.

“Me and Pacquiao or me and Benavidez. I don’t want no other fight now,” Romero said
