British welterweight contender Jack Catterall continues his march toward another world title shot when he takes on Ekow Essuman on Saturday night.
Catterall (31-2, 13 KO’s) has long been regarded as one of Britain’s most technically gifted fighters. His narrow and controversial split-decision loss to Josh Taylor in 2022 remains one of the most disputed results in modern British boxing, but “El Gato” has since rebuilt impressively.
Essuman (22-1, 8 KO’s) is a familiar name to British boxing fans. The former British, Commonwealth, and European welterweight champion built his reputation through a relentless engine and pressure-first fighting style. He heads into this one after beating Josh Taylor convincingly in May, which I tipped at huge odds.
Jack Catterall – Odds 1.44
Record: 31-2, 13 KO’s
Age: 32
Height: 5ft7
Reach: 69”
Weight: Welterweight
Stance: Southpaw
Ekow Essuman – Odds 2.75
Record: 22-1, 8 KO’s
Age: 36
Height: 5ft10
Reach: 66”
Weight: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
Catterall will rely on his educated right jab, sharp movement, and crisp counters from the southpaw stance. Expect him to circle off the ropes, pick his spots, and control distance throughout the fight.
Essuman, by contrast, will look to close the gap, rough Catterall up on the inside, and turn it into a grind. His best chance is to make the fight ugly early, forcing exchanges and hoping Catterall’s precision breaks down under pressure.
However, Catterall’s ring IQ, discipline, and composure are elite-level. He’s proven against better opponents that he can adapt, stay calm under fire, and control the rhythm of a fight.
Catterall looks sharper, more confident, and more composed than ever. A win over Essuman would keep him firmly in contention for a world title shot in 2026. Essuman’s toughness and championship experience mean he’s no pushover. If he can make the weight safely and bring his trademark pressure, he could test Catterall’s ability to handle sustained physicality.
This fight looks less like a 50/50 and more like a measuring stick for Catterall’s next world-level push. Essuman is rugged, proud, and experienced, but Catterall’s technical class should shine through once again. Unless he takes unnecessary risks in search of a stoppage, this should be another composed, professional performance from a fighter who has quietly become one of Britain’s most complete boxers.
I’m taking Jack Catterall to win by decision or technical decision at odds of 1.73 . I don’t expect any knockdowns, and I think the scorecards will read something like 8 rounds to Catterall and 4 rounds to Essuman.
