Jaime Munguia Outboxes Armando Resendiz, Claims WBA Super Middleweight Title

LAS VEGAS — Jaime Munguia returned to familiar ground and delivered a very different result. Nearly two years after suffering a one-sided loss to Canelo Alvarez at T-Mobile Arena, Munguia redeemed himself Saturday night by capturing the WBA super middleweight title with a dominant unanimous decision over Armando Resendiz.

Judges scored the bout 120-108, 119-109, and 117-111, as Munguia controlled the action over 12 rounds on the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez.

This wasn’t the all-action Munguia fans were used to. Working under renowned trainer Eddy Reynoso and with Alvarez shouting instructions from ringside Munguia showcased a more disciplined, tactical approach.

He boxed effectively off the back foot, using movement and selective combinations to neutralize Resendiz’s pressure. The strategy drew boos at times from the crowd, but it proved highly effective.

Momentum Builds Late

Munguia (46-2, 35 KOs) gradually took control as the fight progressed.

• Round 9: A sharp right hand snapped Resendiz’s head back
• Round 10: Munguia dominated with clean combinations
• Round 12: A left-right combo briefly stunned Resendiz late

Despite the momentum, Resendiz (16-3, 11 KOs) showed durability, continuing to press forward and exchange even in the final round.

Resendiz entered the bout riding momentum after his upset victory over Caleb Plant last year. But against Munguia, he struggled to cut off the ring and consistently land clean shots against a more mobile opponent.

While he had moments particularly in the middle rounds where he backed Munguia to the ropes it wasn’t enough to sway the judges.

Saturday marked Munguia’s second straight redemption performance. He last fought in May 2025, avenging a shocking knockout loss to Bruno Surace with a convincing decision win in Riyadh.

That victory came with controversy after an adverse finding in a drug test, though Munguia was later cleared, attributing the result to a contaminated supplement.
