Viva the mighty Bruno!
Bruno Surace wasn’t even trending at his local French bakery before taking on Jaime Munguia Saturday night in the latter’s native, Tijuana, MX. Well, now he’s trending globally. The 2024 Upset of the Year was punctuated when the previously unheralded Frenchman leveled the former world champion, known for possessing an iron chin, with a right hand that sent him down in a heap. Surace had to get off the canvas as well. Munguia floored him with a huge left hook in round two, but Surace covered up well to survive the onslaught.
Unreal finish in slow-mo

As for the crowd, there was nothing but silence. Other than a few cheers from Surace’s corner and a giant, gleaming smile from the fighter, you could hear a penny drop, and the capacity crowd would have heard it from a mile away. A post-fight interview? There was none. Everyone was too shocked, including those at ringside.
Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs), typically known for his aggressive and tenacious style, started patiently. Both men traded jabs in the opening round, but with less than a minute remaining, Surace began to land. He connected with a series of rights, including a looping shot late. But in round two, Munguia let his power do the talking. He snuck in a left hook that sent Surace down on his back. Everyone thought the fight was over, except for Surace. Munguia continued to dictate the action in the third, knocking Surace into the ropes with one-two combinations and stiff left hands to the body. However, Munguia was also missing with a lot of shots as Surace was covering up well against the ropes.
In the fourth round, Surace started to land more consistently, including a right uppercut that momentarily knocked Munguia off balance. The Mexican’s defensive irresponsibility was also displayed in the fifth round as Surace drilled him with chopping right hands and a three-punch combination.
But going into the fight, Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) had just four knockout wins in 27 bouts. Furthermore, 17 of his 27 opponents (63%) had losing records. It’s possible that Munguia simply had no respect for Surace’s punching power based on what was initially seen as a lackluster résumé.
Following a sixth round that saw Munguia go back to boxing Surace from a distance and use his jab to keep his adversary at bay, he reverted to not keeping his guard up, and the underdog made him pay dearly. Underestimated to the point that a majority of sportsbooks didn’t even post the fight, Surace delivered a right hand that planted Munguia flat on his back. The ex-154-pound titleholder was able to beat the count, but with glossy eyes and no balance, the referee had no choice but to bring their scheduled 10-round contest to a halt.
The magnitude of this accomplishment is hard to overstate. Surace fought in his first 12-round bout last December and hasn’t boxed in a 10-round affair since 2021. To boot, the 26-year-old typically competes at 160 pounds. Everything was crafted for Munguia to have an epic knockout victory, from the weight to the venue and the pre-fight peasantry.
But instead, Surace ruined everything by boxing a beautiful fight. Besides the second-round knockdown, he was punching with bad intentions with right hands, uppercuts, combinations, and counters that belied his KO percentage. He’s now officially a player in boxing, although it awaits to be seen at which division. It’s possible Surace could move back down to middleweight.
On the other hand, it’s very difficult to overstate how devastating this loss is for Munguia for reasons already mentioned. How does one recover from such a massive setback? Munguia had an opportunity for a big-money world title eliminator against Christian Mbilli. Moreover, if he had won, Munguia could have capitalized eventually on a slew of vacant belts when/if Canelo Alvarez decided to retire from the sport. That’s all gone. Alas, it’s back to the drawing board for Munguia. He’s only 28 years old, but it could take him a good amount of years to recover from this historically bad performance.
But for Surace, his life has changed forever. That’s the beauty of boxing. That’s why we fight the fights and why this sport stands alone.
