Jake Paul shared that he will be ranked by the WBC and WBA if he wins his upcoming 10-round fight against former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. While on “The Pat McAfee Show” and wearing a sombrero, Paul said, “The sanctioning bodies know that I’m serious…if I beat Chavez I will be ranked.” He also believes that this bout is going to be his breakout performance. Who will win?
WBC rules state that a fighter has to be ranked in the top 15 to be considered for a world title shot. The current 200 lb. (cruiserweight) champion is Badou Jack. The WBA considers the caliber of opponents, record, and activity, among other factors, to rank boxers.
Fighters also need at least two 10-round fights for ranking consideration. The Chavez Jr. battle would be Paul’s second. He hasn’t beaten anyone ranked within the WBC or WBA and lost in 2023 to Tommy Fury. Fury was ranked 39 at cruiserweight and is the younger half-brother of former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman did say that he would consider Paul if he defeats Chavez Jr. Sulaiman stated, “If he beats Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., I think that puts him in a different position.”
Paul has said that his goal is to become a world champion. A win and world ranking will bring him one step closer to making that dream a reality. Over the last few years, he has received backlash for fighting old, washed-up, or non-boxers/fighters. This may be his toughest test since losing to Tommy Fury. Will Jake Paul finally be taken seriously as a boxer?
