Jake Paul Vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Breakdown

Jake Paul takes on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28, as we look at how the fight could play out.

Paul enters into the fight with a five-fight win streak. That included wins against Nate Diaz, Andre August, Ryan Bourland, Mike Perry and Mike Tyson. The Tyson fight was not a yardstick for Paul’s level since Iron Mike was past his prime. Tyson entered the fight as a 56-year-old who had not boxed professionally since 2005. Paul’s only loss came against Tommy Fury, who was his first pro boxer.

While a rematch has been talked about, it never materialized. Meanwhile, Chavez Jr. secured a win against former UFC fighter Uriah Hall in his last bout. Chavez Jr. is the former WBC Middleweight Champion. However, he has only boxed once since 2021, showing he is not the most active fighter.

Tactics

Paul’s main asset is his right hand over the top. He showed this in the Andre August and Mike Perry wins, as the right hand was critical in securing those stoppages. Paul also uses his jab to maintain distance to set up the right hand once he has established control of the centre ring. However, Paul has shown he gasses out later down the line. He showed this in the Fury fight, where he was increasingly clinching once he tired. Paul’s level of opposition must be questioned. He has largely faced former MMA fighters with limited experience in boxing. Until Paul beats a credible name, much like Chavez Jr., the jury is still out on his level.

Chavez Jr. faces the pressure to live up to the family name. His father, Chavez Sr., has said openly that Paul cannot beat his son. Chavez Jr. is known for closing the gap before unleashing combinations to the body to slow people down. Chavez uses short hooks and uppercuts to hurt his opponents once he gets inside. Chavez Jr. has also faced the much bigger names, having been in the ring with the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Danny Jacobs. While he came up short in both fights, they were against world championship opposition. The winner puts themselves closer to a title shot against the likes of Zurdo Ramirez or Badou Jack, putting everything on the line.
