Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson: Press Conference Quotes and Fight Prediction

Netflix’s first foray into live boxing will see Jake Paul (10-1, 7 KOs) take on Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs, 2 NCs) in the main event.

The two men headline a Most Valuable Promotions card at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. Although they will be fighting over eight two-minute rounds and wearing 14-ounce gloves instead of 10-ounce gloves, Paul vs. Tyson has been sanctioned as a professional boxing bout by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Boxing fans around the world can catch the action live on Netflix.

Ahead of their bout on Friday, Tyson and Paul spoke at a final press conference. Below is some of what they had to say.

“It’s cute, you know,” said Paul. “I fear no man so I want him to be that old, savage Mike. He says he’s going to kill me. Is that what you’re going to do, Mike? Cause I’m ready. I want that killer. I want the hardest match possible Friday night and I want there to be no excuses from everyone at home when I knock him out. So, is that what you’re going to bring? Homicide?”

Fight Prediction

Normally I predict the main event of a card based on what I think of the two fighters involved. I take into considerationtheir overall skillset and records before deciding who I think wins. As I write this, I struggle to do that.

Boxing has always been a spectacle. Two people beating each other up for the enjoyment of those watching. And I believe that is perfectly okay. However, this event will see a 58-year-old Tyson take on Paul, who is over 30 years his junior.

Boxers in their 50s entering the ring is nothing new, unfortunately. Whether it’s Bernard Hopkins back in 2016 or Oliver McCall and Stacy Frazier four days after Paul-Tyson. Nor is this a uniquely American phenomenon. In December, Ike Ibeabuchi returns to the ring in Nigeria more than 25 years after his last professional contest. What sets Paul-Tyson apart from other fights that involve people over the age of 50 is its magnitude.

In the end, I see no point in making a prediction. Whatever happens, it will just be an incredibly sad affair. I would like to end this portion of the article with something Tyson himself said to Big Fight Weekend’s own Dan Rafael (at the time with ESPN.com) following the Kevin McBride fight.

“I’m not into the boxing world no more. I don’t want to be remembered at all. My heart is not in the fighting game. I don’t even like it no more. I hate the smell of the gym. I won’t go in the Hall of Fame. I’m just not that guy anymore.”
