Janibek Alimkhanuly (IBF/WBO Middleweight Champion) has tested positive for meldonium following a VADA test on November 15, meaning he will not face Erislandy Lara (WBA Champ) on December 6.

The news means that Lara will now box Johan Gonzalez. Reports stress that Meldonium helps the body use energy more efficiently, so boxers can have better endurance and more stamina during a fight. It also allegedly helps the boxer recover faster between rounds and training sessions.

It is a massive setback for Janibek, who is on a four-fight knockout streak, the latest of which came against Anauel Ngamissengue in April. That victory followed his dismantling of Tim Tszyu, as Janibek has not gone the distance since facing Denzel Bentley in November 2022. Meanwhile, Alimkhanuly has been linked with a fight against Terence Crawford, who could move down to 160 for this bout. Janibek has denied any wrongdoing, saying he is innocent.

Reaction

“The results of this analysis are as follows: Adverse Analytical Finding: Meldonium detected at an estimated concentration greater than the minimum reporting threshold when adjusted for the sample specific gravity. Attached to this letter is: (1) the Doping Control Form for specimen 8411683; and 2) the laboratory report for specimen 8411683.

“Mr. Alimkhanuly has the right to promptly (within ten days) request analysis of the “B” sample at his expense. Please be aware that VADA does not adjudicate results nor determine whether sanctions are appropriate. As with all results, adverse findings are reported to the relevant commission(s) and organization(s) who may make such determinations,” VADA statement

“I have always supported clean sport you know this well. I was surprised when I read the news. VADA took the first test and said everything was clean. I have not made any changes to my vitamins. I don’t know what happened with the second test, so I requested a retest,” Alimkhanuly stated
