Jaron Ennis faces Uisma Lima in a WBA title eliminator at 154, as we look at how the fight could play out.

Ennis, who is undefeated with a 34-0 record, has his first fight at junior middleweight. He moves up after having unified the 147 division, beating Eimantas Stanionis to claim the IBF and WBA Welterweight titles. While he could have pursued undisputed, his decision to move up is part of his plans to become a two-weight world champion. Meanwhile, Lima has four wins on the spin, having defeated Shervantaigh Koopman in his last fight. Here is how the fight could play out tactically.

Pre-Fight

“I really don’t care [about the criticism]. I’m just glad to be able to make my debut at 154. After I take care of business, I’ll worry about the other guys. I have to make a big statement against Lima. My main goal is Lima. That’s it right now, at the moment. I have to stay focused and on point. You can’t overlook anybody or think ahead, can’t lose focus on what’s in front of you,” Ennis said

“I’m from Portugal, since day one I don’t have nothing, I need to do everything alone. Now is my time to show my skills and everything. I think this fight is coming in the best year for me because I’m almost my prime, 32. I’m confident and people will see this,” Lima stated

The Approach

Ennis’ goal will be to establish a quick pace and manage the distance. For example, Ennis should use a sharp, probing jab to keep Lima on the outside, then quickly switch from an orthodox to a southpaw stance to confuse Lima’s defensive reads. This switch-hitting ability is a nightmare for opponents and allows Ennis to land heavy, straight shots from unexpected angles.

Lima’s best strategy is to be the aggressor and apply relentless, pressure to unsettle the normally composed Ennis. Lima, who has nothing to lose and is riding a four-fight win streak, cannot afford to fight off the back foot. His aim must be to consistently cut off the ring, forcing Ennis to fight in tighter spaces where his superior speed is neutralized. Lima needs to advance behind a high guard, marching forward and throwing heavy, close-range combinations, particularly hooks and uppercuts, to target the head and body.
