According to Floyd Mayweather’s uncle, Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) has been talking about retiring for a while.
Davis recently shocked the boxing community and fans alike by announcing that he wishes to bid adieu to the sport that made him a household name. While he has stated that he is ‘tired of the sport,’ fans have been hopeful of witnessing more explosive showdowns from the formidable ‘Tank’ Davis in the years to come. However, Jeff Mayweather recently confirmed their fears by revealing that the WBA lightweight champion has been pondering about retirement for a while.
Mayweather was recently interviewed by Fred Talks Fighting. In conversation, he shed light on Davis’ retirement and stated that he will be looking at a few more fights in 2025 to financially secure himself before stepping down. “I believe him. He’s been talking about retiring for a while. So yeah, I believe him. I believe him,” he said. “He should have definitely been financially secure and I think that’s the only thing. That’s why he’s still fighting. He wants to be; make sure that he’s secure.”
Davis expressed his desire to spend more time with his children and also invest in real estate like his mentor Floyd Mayweather, which further drove his decision to retire from boxing. ‘Jazzy’ Mayweather is supportive of this decision and added that it is important to spend time with one’s family.
“He wants to spend time with his kids and things like that. And I mean, that’s good. I mean basically be able to retire and you know, and be able to enjoy his life with his kids,” he said.
Davis is currently set to defend his title against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1 at the Barclays Center in New York. In a story posted to his Instagram, Davis made an abrupt announcement stating that the “fight is f*cking cancelled.”
However, his promotional company has continued to promote the fight. Moreover, Roach revealed that he has yet to receive any information about the potential cancellation of the fight. Responding to fans after Davis’ post, he said, “The f--- ya keep asking me for? He said that s---, not me. I’m locked in; ain’t s--- changed. March 1st, Brooklyn #AndTheNew.”
